Curriculum

Holy Trinity Church of England Academy bases its curriculum on the New National Curriculum 2014.

The National Curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to become educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said and helps to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.

The National Curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space within the school day and throughout each week, term and year to extend beyond the National Curriculum specifications. It provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons that promote pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum. Through high-quality adaptive teaching, lessons are carefully tailored to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring that every child is supported, challenged and enabled to achieve their full potential.

Throughout Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, children are taught: English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Music and Physical Education. In addition, the Academy provides Religious Education and a daily act of collective worship, both of which are central to the life and work of the school. Teachers use adaptive teaching strategies across all curriculum areas to respond to pupils’ differing starting points, learning styles and needs, enabling all children to access the curriculum successfully.

There are also national assessments for primary school children at ages 7 and 11 years. These tests assess children’s attainment in Mathematics, Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. A phonics screening check is carried out in Year 1.

Our Maths curriculum is delivered through engaging and structured lessons that develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Adaptive teaching approaches are used to provide appropriate support and challenge for all learners.

Our English curriculum is delivered through high-quality texts and rich learning opportunities that build strong foundations in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Teachers adapt learning experiences to ensure that all pupils are supported to achieve their full potential in English.

Many of our subjects are delivered using Kapow schemes of work, including Science, Computing, History, Geography, Design Technology and Art. More information about these subjects and their delivery can be found in the curriculum section of our website.

The Religious Education curriculum is delivered following the Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle Diocesan Syllabus for Religious Education. The curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to learn about a variety of worldviews: religious and non-religious. They are explored in different ways encouraging pupils to reflect and consider their own worldview.

A cross-curricular approach has been adopted for the teaching of PSHE, although some aspects are taught discretely. The Academy is a registered KIDSAFE school and has two trained KIDSAFE tutors. The KIDSAFE programme is taught as part of the PSHE curriculum and provides pupils with the knowledge and strategies needed to help keep themselves safe.

We offer a meaningful curriculum which enriches the life experiences of all of our children.  It is broad and balanced, creative and promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and physical development of pupils at the school.

The school curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences that are planned for our pupils and is based on the National Curriculum and  Foundation Stage Framework and the Development Matters guidance, but extends far beyond these. We encourage our children to think like scientists, historians, artists, theologians, to name but a few examples. We have, given great thought to the essential knowledge that we want our pupils to learn providing a wealth of opportunities to develop their essential life skills. To support our delivery of the curriculum we use Kapow, Understanding Christianity and Charanga.

Our distinctiveness as a Church School means we promote Christian Values in every aspect of school life.  We are proud of our Christian family here at Holy Trinity CE Academy.  We follow the Diocesan agreed syllabus for Religious Education.

Our holistic approach to the teaching and learning of every child is intrinsically woven in every thread of school life.  The social, emotional and mental health of every individual child is paramount.
